On the Record: Public LedgerPrivacy Policy
I.Scope and versions
This policy covers the OnTheRecord iOS app, which is distributed in the United States and covers U.S. politics. The advertising practices below apply when advertising is active, including Google test ads in development and TestFlight. Earlier version 1.0 (10) did not have active advertising or paid offers.
II.Your political activity
Search text and questions are used locally to find records. They are not sent to 5280 Labs or Google for advertising. The app does not create an account, keep a search history, or build a profile of your political views. Politician names, parties, profiles you view, and question content are not supplied for ad targeting. Live AI answers and live news search are not connected.
III.Official records and external links
The app retrieves public member directories and House voting records from clerk.house.gov and senate.gov. Version 1.2 also retrieves requested bill details from govinfo.gov. GovInfo receives the requested public bill identifier and standard connection information. Candidate searches use bundled state election lists and Federal Election Commission records; the app does not transmit your candidate search text to those sources. Those servers receive standard connection information such as your IP address under their own policies. A bundled snapshot allows some browsing offline. Source links open government pages or cited reporting in your browser; those websites have their own privacy policies. Opening this policy also makes a normal browser request to our website.
IV.Advertising information sent to Google
The advertising update uses Google Mobile Ads 13.11.0 and Google User Messaging Platform 3.1.0, without mediation or Firebase Analytics. Google may collect IP-derived approximate location, device identifiers such as the Identifier for Vendor (IDFV), advertising data, product interactions, crash information, performance data and other diagnostics. The app does not request precise GPS location or access the advertising identifier (IDFA).
| Information | Google Mobile Ads purpose | Linked to a user or device |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate location, device ID, advertising data and product interactions | Third-party advertising and analytics | Yes |
| Crash information, performance data and other diagnostics | Analytics | No |
The consent SDK also processes applicable connection/location, interaction and performance information to provide privacy choices and consent functionality. Google processes these categories under its own policies. See Google's SDK data disclosures and Google's privacy policy.
All ad requests are non-personalized. Publisher first-party ID and advertising personalization are disabled, and the app does not request App Tracking Transparency permission. Google support confirmed that this configuration does not link the app's data with other companies' apps or websites for targeted advertising or advertising measurement under Apple's tracking definition. Device-linked collection for the purposes above still occurs; this is not a promise of no data collection.
Ads are separate from political information and do not affect sources, search results or evidence. Banners appear in Explore. Occasional full-screen ads can appear after a completed profile visit; the app preserves Google's close controls and limits their frequency. Missing ads or privacy-setting errors do not block browsing.
V.Your advertising privacy choices
The app checks Google's consent requirements before requesting ads and presents a required consent form when applicable. Open Settings for the privacy policy and, when Google requires it, Ad privacy options. Applicable U.S. sale/sharing choices are provided through that form. You can continue browsing after opting out. Non-personalized ads may still appear, and limited processing for ad delivery, fraud prevention and diagnostics may continue. If required privacy settings cannot be loaded, advertising stays off.
U.S.-only App Store availability does not prevent travel. Google determines applicable consent requirements from the device's location; a required form must be completed before ad requests are allowed. No new distribution territory is introduced by consent handling.
VI.Purchases and local storage
The advertising update offers a one-time $0.99 U.S. purchase to remove both banner and full-screen ads. Apple handles payment; 5280 Labs does not receive payment-card information. The app verifies Apple's purchase entitlement on device and offers Restore purchases in Settings. There is no purchase-verification server operated by 5280 Labs.
The app stores the time of the last full-screen ad locally to enforce its cooldown. Version 1.2 also caches original public bill responses in the app’s private storage for offline viewing; this cache is bounded and can be removed with the app. Search and question text remain in screen memory. Removing the app removes its local data, but does not cancel or erase Apple's purchase record; that record allows you to restore ad-free access.
VII.Retention, sharing and requests
5280 Labs does not receive or sell your political searches or questions. Advertising and consent information is transmitted to Google and may be processed by its advertising and service providers for the purposes described above. We do not describe that processing as anonymous or make a blanket promise of no sharing.
Google and Apple control retention of information they process under their own policies. Uninstalling the app does not delete information already held by those providers. For privacy questions or applicable access/deletion requests, contact support@5280labs.app. We can address information we hold and help identify the relevant provider; we cannot promise to erase records controlled by another company.
If you email support, we receive the information you choose to send and use it to respond. Do not send passwords or sensitive political, financial or medical records. Apple may provide aggregate App Store statistics under users' sharing choices.
VIII.Children and future changes
OnTheRecord is a general-audience civic reference app and is not directed at children. Contact support if you believe a child has supplied personal information to us. Features that change how data is handled, such as future server-based answers, will be described here before they are enabled.
